Philosophy of Education
Art in the classroom should strive to be accessible- as teachers, we are just as responsible for the students with less experience as we are for those with plenty. Whether we end up working in schools, art centers, for private businesses, or other types of institutions, our students go out into the community with the skills we have taught them, and the way we inspire them can potentially go on to inspire others. With art education being less widely distributed than most subjects, it's important that the experiences we give our students leave a lasting impression. It's also important that they feel they can continue using creative expressions outside of the classroom.
An art teacher who inspired me was my printmaking professor in college. What I loved about being in her class was that she would get to know each student and encourage them to complete projects in a way that aligned with their personal interests or art focuses. She had an amazing library she'd bring books from about subjects we were interested in- for example, graphic novels, iconography, graphic design, zines, and character design! I hope to also become the type of teacher who can encourage students to learn by emphasizing the integration of their interests.
